A classic application of the laser in this field is the possibility of removal of benign skin disorders, by means of a CO2 laser during an office visit. Excellent results are obtained from these procedures both in terms of rapidity of healing and of satisfactory cosmetic effect.

By proper selection of laser parameters, such as pulse time, intensity and frequency at suitable wavelengths, damage to selective pathological structures can be produced without incurring significant lesions in surrounding healthy tissue (selective photothermolysis). Important applications of this technique are the elimination of telangiectasias and angiomas in which there is selective absorption in the red pigmented areas, hair removal where melanin is the main target chromophore, and tattoo removal.
In tattoo removal, a different technique is normally employed using an appropriate laser (Q-switched Nd:YAG) to cause fragmentation of the pigment granules by mechanical shock, so that natural tissue drainage works to eliminate the colored fragments and, thus, the tattoo.
